The
Internet Marketing Trap:
This article will probably make me a few enemies and get me a few covert “hate
emails” but, I’ve changed my identity and joined the local witness protection
program so that I’m not made a target of snipers and such.
Now, on a more serious note;
Internet Marketing Trap (in'tәr
net' mär'kit ing trap), n., v., 1
the process of signing up on a list and thinking that simply buying everything
they recommend to you will make you successful. [<Modern Internet English
<Frustrated internet marketers <misunderstood words or symbols]
The above word-phrase definition has gained a considerable amount of popularity.
Not that it’s a “popular” subject, but that it’s a very common one.
I remember being pulled into this very trap. I “knew” that all I needed was the
magic software product and all my internet marketing troubles would be solved.
Well, several thousand dollars later I saw that this was just not the way.
Luckily, I learned relatively soon.
Although the many lists I was on would usually have something of interest, it
would typically lead to the all important, “click here now” link where I would
be taken to that incredible sales page that would then sell me on the idea that
I really HAD to have this next thing or my life may just end.
The sequence above is the most common and most heavily used sequence on the
internet with respect to email marketing and it has its rightful place. It is
quite successful for the most part and still works to this day but, who usually
benefits?
Ya, that’s right; the sender (marketer).
Factually, there are actually some very, very good products and services I’ve
purchased this way over the years and I’m darn glad I received that particular
email and you may feel the same.
I recently did an analysis of all the products I purchased over the years, the
costs involved and, the most important thing in my analysis I wanted to know
was, how many of these products had I ACTUALLY used. Not just started to use and
then stopped or downloaded and never got back to it, but actually used.
Well, to make a long analysis short, I was startled by what I’d found. Over 70%
of the products I purchased were still on my computer in different areas like
the downloads folder, my c: drive, my documents, etc.
Without getting into very many details here, I decided to look deeper and try to
figure out why. So, I did and here is what I discovered;
It typically led to one of two scenarios:
ONE:
a. I received the all important marketing email
b. I clicked on the link and bought the product
c. I downloaded it, looked it over quickly and decided I would get back to it
once I figured out the other thing I bought and downloaded just
before this
TWO:
a. I received the all important marketing email
b. I clicked on the link and bought the product
c. I downloaded it and got stuck with the instructions. There was something
about them that I just didn’t understand. Something about maybe, changing
permissions on folders or to FTP this to my hosting account, or maybe it was
creating the mysql database.
I don’t know if either one of the above situations has ever happened to you but,
I’m willing to make a bet that it has and I’d probably win the bet.
So, what to do? What to do?
What was the trouble? Why did I do it again?
I was supposed to stop doing that! My wife is going to be upset with me again
because I spent money again!
Well, between us boys and girls, let us take a look here.
In a word, I can say exactly what happened;
CONFUSION!
It’s the confusion during the attempted action that contributes to the stop in
forward progress.
It’s really about that simple. The above can even be broken down into a few
smaller and specific parts and pieces but, if you look this over I think you
might agree.
It was the confusion about what to do next that led to the stop or slow in your
forward progress.
OK. So, what the heck do you do about it?
Well, this is covered in another article on this exact website and frankly, it’s
a simple solution. In fact, the article is even shorter than this one.
